Two Chinese carriers, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, intend to reduce their number of international flights within the region in light of the escalating cost of fuel. The cutback in the number of flights is only temporary, according to a spokesman for China Southern, adding that it was a better alternative to halting services permanently on these routes.
International routes to be cut would include flights from Guangzhou to Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam) and Angkor (Cambodia) starting in June until September. Fewer flights between the Chinese city and Hong Kong are also planned for the same period as well as for Beijing-Seoul connections. The number of international flights to routes outside the region like Los Angeles, Paris, and Sydney may also be reduced.
Plans of China Eastern Airlines are reportedly similar to those of China Southern. Low demand according to company spokesman, Luo Zhuping, was another factor in the decision to cut the number of flights on certain routes.
